As I write this introduction, I am reflecting on the enormity of how much can happen in three months. In the Spring issue, I was complaining about the awful rain we’d had and since then we’ve had practically none and the hottest May on record. We’ve experienced what will probably be the biggest global life-changing event ever and have been reminded of the importance of caring for our family, friends, clients and the wider community.
We’ve embraced the world of Zoom (mostly with ease) and learnt that you can appear “virtually” anywhere but if you are going to carry out meetings in your pyjamas (or worse) remember you are still on camera! We’ve “clapped for carers”, found that the one thing people fear running out of most of all in a crisis is toilet rolls and adopted the word “furloughed”, previously never used at all in my case, seamlessly into our vocabulary. Many of us have also taken on the new job as “home schoolers” and I’ve realised that having that “special pencil” for a seven-year-old is crucial, increasing my respect for the work and patience provided by schoolteachers. And I haven’t even mentioned the markets...
